 Fresno County Spotlight

Fresno County Department of Public Health (FCDPH), in partnership with the Fresno Community Health Improvement Partnership (FCHIP), has established a Community Health Worker (CHW) Network HUB that is comprised of seven community-based organizations (CBOs). This network is composed of trusted community messengers that provide intervention services by addressing social determinants of health in the most underserved areas within Fresno County. The CHW Network HUB has thirty-five CHWs that collectively speak over sixteen languages. This is vital for the representation of Fresno’s diverse community and assures that services are being provided in a culturally and linguistically appropriate manner.

In addition to this initiative, FCDPH is currently in the process of completing the Community Health Needs Assessment. As part of this process, the Nationwide Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Standards (CLAS) were used to distribute a survey (that met the language needs of residents) to identify health priority needs. The data collected from residents will inform future priority health needs in Fresno County. Lastly, FCDPH is incorporating specific health equity-related activities with subcontracted partners working with the CHW Network HUB. These activities include training, assessments, and the completion of a health equity plan. The outcome of these initiatives is geared towards the delivery of services and resources that cater to our diverse community and address residents’ concerns, priorities, and needs.

Disability Pride Month

Disability Pride Month is a time to recognize and celebrate the achievements of people with disabilities. It is celebrated each year in July, in recognition of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26, 1990. This milestone civil rights legislation prohibits the discrimination against people with disabilities in various areas, including employment, transportation and telecommunications. People with disabilities have been marginalized for decades and continue to face widespread discrimination. It is crucial to raise awareness, challenge stereotypes, and actively work towards creating an inclusive and equitable society that respects the rights of people with disabilities.

There are several ways to celebrate Disability Pride Month. Individuals can:

  • Join a disability pride parade in your area.
  • Talk about accessibility, inclusivity and ableism.
  • Read books or watch movies about people with disabilities.

National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month

National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month is observed each July to focus on the unique mental health challenges faced by racial and ethnic minorities. Minority communities often face obstacles to accessing mental healthcare such as inadequate insurance coverage, provider shortages, cultural stigmas, and language barriers. Historical experiences of trauma, discrimination, and mistreatment within healthcare systems have also contributed to mistrust and hesitancy to engage with mental health services. By addressing these barriers and advocating for culturally competent care, we can take significant steps toward promoting health equity for minority communities.

There are several ways to observe National Minority Health Awareness month. Public health departments can:

  • Create culturally and linguistically competent mental health educational materials.
  • Partner with community-based organizations focused on serving minority communities on mental health initiatives.
  • Offer cultural competency/humility training to staff.

Resources

The Government Alliance on Race and Equity (GARE), joined forces with the Insight Center for Community Economic Development and author Tim Lohrentz to produce a hands-on issue paper on government contracting and procurement. It covers the best local governmental practices and strategies that advance racial equity and help create equitable government and communities.

The American Public Health Association (APHA) examines how structural racism and discriminatory policies led to housing and health inequality in America for low-income communities and people of color. To equip public health professionals with the tools to address these inequities in their communities, the report outlines numerous ways to advance equitable change in housing equity through policy and advocacy, cross-sector partnerships, and community engagement and education.
