June is LGBTQIA+ Pride Month

This June, we celebrate LGBTQIA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual) persons, history, and activism.

The first Pride celebration happened on June 28th, 1970 on the first anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. Demonstrations remember Stonewall and advocating for LGBTQIA rights took place in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles.

As Public Health workers, June is a great opportunity to reassess your LHJs involvement with the LGBTQIA+ community and how your LHJ can best support this underserved community. LHJ participation in annual Pride Celebrations are a great way to show support!

To help your LHJ make new partners, The California LGBTQ Health and Services Network has a database of organizations that serve the LGBTQIA population in different counties across the state.

Additionally, the City of Long Beach, CA released questions for Health Departments at the policy, programmatic, and individual to consider during Pride Month. We hope these can prompt conversations in your health departments.

To learn more about the history of Pride, visit this page from the Library of Congress.

Juneteenth 2024

Juneteenth is June 19th, 2024. This date marks the anniversary of June 19th, 1865 when 250,000 enslaved people in Texas were freed by the Union Army through the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation, two and a half years after it was issued by Abraham Lincoln. Juneteenth was first celebrated as federal holiday in 2021, but has been celebrated under names such as Jubilee Day, Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, and Black Independence Day since 1866.

The goal of Juneteenth has been described by historians as “to celebrate, to educate, and to agitate.” It is a good reminder that celebration of emancipation does not erase the historical injustices done to enslaved people in the United States, the repercussions of which we still feel today. As public health equity professionals, it is encouraged to declare racism as a public health crisis. CHEAC has put together a list of county declarations in California if you would like to see local examples. The Network for Public Health Law has put together an FAQ on declarations of racism as a public health crisis including toolkits, correct race and ethnicity terminology, implementing anti-racist practices, and how this intersects with other social justice issues. Visit the Network of Public Health Law's website to view these resources.

To learn more about the history of Juneteenth, read Today in History, June 19th from the Library of Congress.

There are many important causes we can learn about and advocate for in June of 2024. Please take a look at other major movements, such as Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, National Safety Month, PTSD Awareness Month and many more!
