2023 California LHJ Equity Convening Spotlight

For the past two years the Office of Health Equity has been working with local health jurisdictions (LHJs) throughout California to build and strengthen health equity infrastructure that is instrumental to help close the health disparities within our state. In September, we came together for two days to celebrate wins, learn from each other, and be inspired to keep the momentum going and continue this work.

During the convening we heard from amazing speakers on various topics such as Rest is Not a Reward, Messaging on Building Narrative Power to Advance Racial & Health Equity, Using Strategic Communications to Advance Health Equity Across California, and much more. Our Regional TA Partners: California Center on Rural Policy (CCRP), CA4Health, Central California Public Health Consortium (CCPHC), Bay Area Regional Health Inequities Initiative (BARHII), and the Public Health Alliance of Southern CA (Alliance) facilitated regional break out rooms and many of them met with the LHJs for the first time. Lastly, throughout the convening we had Rio Holaday, conduct graphic recording in real-time to capture the main ideas of conversations and presentations in a fun and innovative fashion.

If you were able to attend, please explore the presentations and graphic recordings in The Equity Portal Forum or the Equity Portal Resources

You can also view some of the photographs of the two days taken by Matt Salvo Image in our Events Website.

We hope that those who attended feel rejuvenated, refreshed, and inspired to achieving the collective vision of advancing health equity through new lenses and tools!

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October has been recognized as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is a time annually devoted to educating everyone about breast cancer and the importance of early detection and access to timely, high-quality care.

The American Cancer Society has grown into the Nation’s largest and most impactful cancer movement. Visit their site to find an upcoming Breast Cancer Awareness Event near you.

Pink Ribbon Sunday Mammography Awareness Program

Many women do not get their recommended mammography screenings due to fear, time, lack of knowledge or concerns about cost. In response to this, the FDA Office of Women’s Health launched the Pink Ribbon Sunday Mammography Awareness Program in 1998 to educate women about early detection of breast cancer through mammography. The Pink Ribbon Guide shares ways you can help make a difference including distributing reliable health information, providing emotional support, and connecting individuals to local resources.

Learn more about the Pink Ribbon Program here:  Pink Ribbon Guide: Mammography Matters.

Men’s Breast Cancer Awareness Week

Although breast cancer is much more common in women, breast cancer affects men too. In 2021, U.S. President Joe Biden designated October 17 to October 23 as Men’s Breast Cancer Awareness Week. The lack of awareness and stigma can be barriers to detection and care. Some men, trans men, and non-binary people choose to

call their cancer chest cancer.

Indigenous Peoples Day

Indigenous Peoples’ Day honors the histories, cultures, and perspectives of Indigenous peoples and their ancestors who lived on the land now known as North America. They existed in these areas for thousands of years before the first European explorers arrived. Indigenous Peoples’ Day is celebrated annually on the second Monday in October. This year, it will be observed on Monday, October 9.
