San Benito County Spotlight: Health and Equity Fair

San Benito partnered with the San Andreas Continuation High School to share community resources with youth and increase their knowledge and understanding of health equity and health disparities. They met with the school principal to host two equity fairs in January and March 2023 to provide resources for students. San Benito’s Tobacco Control Program came to demonstrate the effects of smoking at a young age and collaborated with the Oral Health Program to explain how smoking affects their teeth. The Workforce Development Center also attended the fair to talk about their services, which included applying to technical school, applying to jobs, and building resumes.

San Benito’s Equity Team attended to share information about health equity and recruit students for an advisory committee to increase student engagement and identify their needs. The Equity Team will meet once to twice a month during the students’ lunch hour to talk about lacking resources in their school and community and develop solutions for these issues. Some topics could include career development, public speaking, and professional development. Students that participate in the advisory group will be given an incentive. San Benito County will convene the student advisory group in fall 2023 and looks forward to working with the students and staff to increase awareness of health equity and the health disparities that exist in their community.

LGBTQ+ Pride Month

June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) Pride Month. Pride month is currently celebrated each year in June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan. The Stonewall Uprising, a series of events between police and LGBTQ+ protesters that stretched over six days was a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. It was officially recognized by the U.S. government when President Bill Clinton declared June 1999 “Gay and Lesbian Pride Month,” then President Barack Obama proclaimed June to be “LGBT Pride Month,” and President Joe Biden further expanded the observance to “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ+) Pride Month. Today, celebrations include parades, rallies, picnics, parties, workshops, concerts, and countless more events that attract millions of participants around the world. Memorials are also held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals have had on history at local, national, and international level.
